Pine Car Derby

This week's Pioneer Club featured the much-anticipated Pine Car Derby tradition! The kids were each given a block of wood to carve/sand/paint into any design at home and add the wheels. We had a few snowboard creations and even a sled for a dog team show up this year. :)

Each car is weighed in, the right weights are added underneath, a little more carving, graphite powder sprinkled to make the wheels spin fast, and then set on the table to be judged for craftsmanship awards.

Finally, it was time to race! :) The kids handed their car up to the starting block, then ran down to the finish line to see the winner - ZOOM! Mark and Dave Edens were very generous to come out of "retirement" to run the event again this year with extra help from Kevin and Sherrie Cooley and Stephanie Rodriguez - THANK YOU! Brandon and Clayton's cars each won a couple races of their double elimination events. But my class with Jordan was so small we got to do round-robin where every car raced every car, and Jordan came out the winner in the Pathfinder group! It's another fun evening in the record books for our favorite young ones and all the young at heart.
