Sea Otter Awareness Week

A few students from Brandon's sixth grade class were invited to the Islands and Oceans Visitor Center in town Friday night for an informal informational hour highlighting our sea otter friends in Kachemak Bay. Their class took a couple field trips on the bay and attended a seminar at the Visitor Center last spring with one of the scientists at the Center to study the critters. They made sea otter paper bag puppets, drew their own sketches of sea otters in the bay, and wrote a page essay summarizing some of the facts they learned. These are all posted on the wall at the Center this week.
The students answered questions from community members that came... Did you know that sea otters eat 1/3 of their body weight a day? That their fur is the densest of any mammal? That the mothers usually float on their backs with their young on their stomach, but wrap their babies in kelp "blankets" on the survace of the water while they dive to forage for clams? There are an estimated 2,500 of these critters in the bay - we're lucky to get to see these cool creations of our God up close pretty often. The boys went out to set the crab pots and go trolling for king salmon with their Dad today, so I'm sure they'll find several along the way!
