Seldovia Field Trip

This Thursday Jordan's third grade class joined two other second grade classes on a field trip to Seldovia. The trip began with an art/geography lesson on the beach for the 60 students while the parents had orientation. We boarded the ferry Tustamena at 11:30 a.m. with backpacks full rain gear and food. Lunch, a tour of the captain's deck, and sightings of whale spoutings were highlights for the hour and a half trip across Kachemak Bay to Seldovia, a small fishing/tourist community near the original native village and accessible only by boat or plane.
The parents were each assigned two or three kids, so I had Troy and Jordan for the day, and we were handed a map with a few key destinations/trails and told to be back at the ship in 4 hours - have fun! It RAINED hard the entire time we were there, so the boys enjoyed splashing in every puddle on our hiking tour of Main Street, the Visitor Center/Museum, the old Boardwalk, loop by Seldovia Slough, the school, Boys and s Club, and beautiful beach spot. We collected nature treasures, viewed historic photos and relics, picked berries, compared similarities/ differences in our communities, and met and interacted with Seldovia children.

We were ready to peel off wet layers and eat dinner by the time we reboarded the ferry to cataloge our adventures and share tales until we docked in Homer at 7:15 p.m. What a big day - our hot tub and beds sure felt good!
