5th Grade Glacier Hike

Friday, May 13, the McNeil 5th grade class took a field trip across Kachemak Bay for the day. What a gorgeous, sunny day for our excursion to Glacier Spit and the 4 mile hike back to Grewink Glacier!
Bill gave us some quiet time and beginning instructions on the beach.
We hiked through the woods, calling now and then to the bears that we were coming through. :) The trees started tall and thick and got shorter and thinner the closer we got to the glacier... where they had been covered with ice more recently.
At last - what a sight!
We ate our lunch before climbing the rocks for a higher view!

What a day with my boy and his friends...
We actually got HOT, so a few dipped their heads in the glacier lake still covered with ice!
The boys were "King of the Cairn" pile of rocks that hikers contribute to... to clear the path (former creek bottom) and to mark their passage. We found some mud and snow on the Saddle Trail... just 1 1/2 miles up and over the ridge back to Halibut Cove.
After seeing so many toppled spruce beetle killed trees, Jordan and Spencer thought this giant was pretty amazing!
Amazing trails and scenery all around.
We ended with playtime (even some sunburn) on a fabulous beach!
Touch Football barefoot in the sand. :)
Our water taxi took us back home after an awesome day in God's creation!
